Nothing is more exciting than the prospect of building the home of your dreams. Designing the home of your dreams may not be as simple as you initially thought. The process can be overwhelming and some aspects can be overlooked in the design process. The experts at Century Construction have found that the following must haves can often be overlooked when designing a new home.
Making sure there is enough counter space.
There is nothing more frustrating than trying to cook a meal for family or friend and running out of counter space for meal preparation. Juggling bowls and plates trying to get dinner ready is not something homeowner want to deal with when it is time to cook family meals. Counterspace on the blueprint make look adequate, but once you add the toaster, blender, canister, tea or coffee maker, and other kitchen gadgets in you may be surprised to see just how little counter space is left for the preparation of your meals. A few ways to counteract this is to include your kitchen gadgets in the design or consider installing an island to extend available counter space.
Planning for adequate storage space.
Planning adequate storage space and cabinetry can be daunting. How much storage will you need? What kind of cabinetry will fit the design and size you need? When planning for storage decide on the cabinet’s or shelving’s function. Where do you want your dishes to go? Should your pots and pans hang on a rack or stack on a shelf? Do you need extra storage space for extra blankets and pillows? Is there any unused space that would be perfect for small items? Do you want to devote an entire wall in your kitchen for full-height storage? You can get creative with storage space without sacrificing the desired look and feel you want for your home. If you plan on building a house with multiple floors, consider adding hidden storage space under the stairway.
Include a mud room.
If you have children and pets running in and out of the house a mudroom is a must. Create a space by the back door with a small drain area and a shower nozzle, add some towel hooks and a small area for shoe storage and your set. You can even install a simple bench to make it easy to take off and put on shoes. This will help cut down on the dirt that gets tracked through the house.
Add outlets in drawers for the bathroom and under cabinets for the kitchen.
You are planning the house of your dreams, have ample outlets without ruining the beauty of the rooms. There never seems to be an outlet where you need it, adding outlets to drawers and under cabinets ensures that you will no longer have to rearrange items to reach an outlet in the kitchen. Keep the hair dryer concealed in the drawer with its own power outlet freeing up counter space and maintaining the beauty of your bathroom.
Consider installing a smart thermostat.
Having the optimal temperature of your house 24/7 feels like a luxury and is a great way to save on your power bills. Smart thermostats learn from your habits and behaviors and allow you to control the climate of your home remotely. They can even adjust the temperature based on the ambient conditions such as humidity. With some smart thermostats, you can even view energy consumption in real-time.
